COLOR ME CRAZY FAMILY PHOTO SESSION

What an amazing time we had during this Color Me Crazy family photo session that took place at Eaton Preserve in Plainfield, IL. This is a session that I have been wanting to do for over a year. I got the idea from seeing pictures from a color fun run one of my friends had participated in. I knew I had to figure out a way to make it happened. So I researched what the color races use. I wanted to be sure it was something that would come out of clothing and not be an allergen to people or be a toxin to the environment. That research is what led me to Holi Powder. Holi Powder is traditionally used during the Hindu festival of Holi which takes place in the spring. During the festival, people throw colored water and colorful powders on one another in joyous celebration. While Holi traditions vary throughout India; the one thing that remains consistent are the beautiful feelings and colors it leaves behind.

The Set Up

So now I had the knowledge, now it was time to find a family that was willing to get dirty! The Nulicek’s were the perfect family for this session. They had recently moved, so I needed to find a location that was in between my home and theirs. I found the hidden gem of Eaton Preserve in Plainfield, IL. What an amazing place. It’s situated right along the Dupage River and sports beautiful wildflowers, barns and large open fields and beautiful lighting. The perfect location for our session. The Nulicek’s started off with nice clean white t-shirts, jeans and tennis shoes. We HAD to get a couple nice clean pics for mom…And then…their game faces. As you’ll see…the shirts didn’t stay white for long!

Step 1: Get Dirty

Everyone picked out their colors and it was time for the fun to begin! I had everyone line up in a horizontal line and made them hold onto their powder until the countdown began. I love the look of anticipation on all of their faces as I started counting down!

Step 2: Color Fight

I told you it didn’t take long to get this family dirty! After the group did their initial throw, I instructed them to go pick out their amo. They had squeeze bottles full of powder, bags of loose powder as well as sacks full of powder that exploded upon impact to choose from. I gave them 5 minutes to just go after each other however they felt. Man…did they deliver! And somehow, dad got the brunt of it!

Step 3: Experiment With Different Powder Techniques

After the kids got mom and dad dirty, I wanted to try some different ideas I had in mind to make the beautiful bold colors mix and really make them fly.

Step 4: Operation Get Mom

It was soon evident after the powder fight…after the experimental powder techniques…that mom just wasn’t messy enough. Mom was such a good sport and actually sat down and gave into just letting the kids essentially dump powder on her. It wasn’t ALL chaos…we actually got some really cool photos out of her sitting and sacrificing herself.

Step 5: Show Me How Dirty You Got!

But not before Mom got Dad just ONE more time…sneaky sneaky Mom!!!

Conclusion: THIS SESSION WAS AMAZING!

I am always looking do create photography experiences that are beyond the norm. I love creating fun environments that allow your family’s love to show organically. This session hit all of those marks and truly tops my favs (and always will). It’s the perfect session for a fun & energetic family. It’s a session for those that have kids who have a hard time warming up to the camera…trust me…they won’t be shy after 2 minutes with this session. It’s also an amazing session for those with older kids that may fight mom on the “typical” family session. This session is a moment in time that this family will be talking about for years to come. In fact…I have already been told that their holiday card will be created from some of these images.

    IT'S THE MONTH OF LOVE!
.
Feeling extra grateful this month for all the love you’ve shown me over the years. 💕
February is the month of love, so I’m collecting love notes! If you’ve worked with me and feel like sharing your experience, I’d absolutely love to hear it. Facebook and Google reviews mean so much to my small business!
.
At first glance, this is a shirtless 4-year-old boy in a red cape playing super hero.
.
But if you look a little closer, you’ll see the scars on his chest...marks of a journey most people will never know.
.
At his 20-week ultrasound, doctors discovered he had a congenital heart defect. He was born with a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)—a hole between the two lower chambers of his heart. Because of that, the main artery carrying blood from his heart was also narrowed, a condition known as a narrow aortic arch.
.
Only 1–2% of babies are born with congenital heart disease.
.
This little boy is one of them. I followed his journey from before he was born to present day.
.
Those scars tell a story of surgeries, hospital stays, strength far beyond his years, and a family who learned early what it means to be brave. They are proof of battles are fought before most kids ever take their first steps.
.
* 3 days old when this guy had open heart surgery
* 35 days in the CCU (Cardiac Care Unit) before he was cleared to come home for the first time.
* 4 extubation tries of his breathing tube before he was able to breathe on his own
* 2 minor strokes
.
All within his first 5 weeks of life.
.
At the time this picture was taken, he was four.
Four years of resilience.
Four years of courage.
Four years of living proof that warriors come in the smallest bodies.
.
This is why I photograph scars.
This is why these photos matter.
Because behind every image is a story worth honoring💙
